As we approach winter, the number of cold days is gradually increasing.
This time we will talk about taro, which we plan to deliver mainly during the winter.
Taro is planted in April or May and harvested in October or November before the frost hits.
At Ark Tategamori, the taro is dug up after the leaves and stems are cut off. If a shovel is used to dig, the tip of the blade may hit the taro and cause damage, so a heavy machine called a "backhoe" is used to dig up the surrounding soil. The work scene is just like a "construction site". The dug-up taro is loaded onto a light truck and carefully moved to the vinyl greenhouse.
Taro does not like frost or sunlight. In order to keep its deliciousness for a long time, holes are dug about 30 to 40 cm deep in the greenhouse and buried in the soil with the roots facing up. By being underground, it can be protected from frost damage and can be stored for a long time due to the moderate moisture.
Before shipping, we dig up the whole plant from under the soil, separate the parent tuber and the baby tuber, cut off the roots, carefully wipe off the soil, and dry them before shipping them to customers.
This year, taro will start being shipped from January. It has a fluffy and sticky texture, so please look forward to it.
