This morning, there was a thin layer of snow in Tategamori.
It was still warm even in December, so the plants in the garden were doing well, but they looked cold covered in snow.
The Kaoru Kaze Garden/paid admission area has been closed for the winter season since Monday, December 2nd.
As we won't be able to take a stroll around the gardens until spring, we'd like to give you an update on what the gardens currently look like.
First, plants in the garden that can withstand the cold are cut at the base and left in that state to survive the winter.
Plants that are a little sensitive to the cold are cut at the base, mulched with straw, and wait for spring.
Laying it around the base of the plants will help prevent them from freezing.
Plants that are sensitive to the cold are dug up and placed in a heated greenhouse to wait for spring.
Prune hard as this will damage the roots quite a bit.
From now on, garden work will involve heavy pruning and training of climbing roses in December.
Hard pruning of rose bushes is done in January and February.
I'll be taking good care of it over the winter, hoping that it will grow healthy again come spring.
